Hopefully

What is wrong with hopefully?

Nothing is wrong with it if it is used correctly. "Hopefully" is an adverb meaning to carry out an action in a hopeful way.  I waited hopefully for the mail to come.

So what is the problem? In spoken language, many people, myself included, are sloppy. They use "hopefully" to mean "I hope that," as in Hopefully, we can get together later this evening. The speaker does not mean that they will get together in a hopeful manner but rather that he/she hopes that the meeting will happen.

My advice? Beware of "hopefully," especially in writing. The evidence could be incriminating!
